Perfect Crown Controversy
The popular Kdrama Perfect Crown has been accused of misrepresenting Korean history and compromising the nation's sovereignty, which has led to a significant issue.
Several royal ceremony scenes were accused of 'historical distortion', which sparked the backlash. The coronation scene in Episode 11 of the drama was especially criticised by viewers, who said that specific symbols and ceremonies depicted Korea as China's subservient rather than an independent, sovereign nation.
During Grand Prince Ian's coronation, officials yelled Cheonse rather than Manse, which was one of the main areas of dispute. According to the critics, Manse represented national independence and sovereignty in Korean history, while Cheonse historically bore connections with vassal nations under imperial China.
Due to South Korea's strong emphasis on cultural identity and historical accuracy, particularly in depictions of Korea's historical sovereignty and connections with China, viewers were displeased.
Perfect Crown's lead actors, IU and Byeon Woo-seok, officially apologised to fans as a result of the severe criticism. According to media reports, IU even started crying as she addressed the matter.
