Tommy Genesis, the Indian-origin rapper also known as Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, is facing significant backlash for her recent music video, ‘True Blue.’ The video, which has gone viral, shows her dressed as a Hindu goddess, adorned with blue body paint, gold jewelry, a maang tikka, a necklace, a gold bikini, stilettos, and a red bindi. Adding to the controversy, she also uses a Christian cross as a prop in ways that many viewers have deemed disrespectful.

The video depicts a woman licking a crucifix and posing with it near her backside, as well as performing gestures such as folding her hands in 'namaste'. These visuals have caused offense to both Hindu and Christian communities, leading to accusations of blasphemy and disrespect, with many labeling it a 'cheap stunt' for viral attention. Social media users widely criticised the video for offending both religious sentiments.

Social Media User Comments On Her Post

One user on X wrote, “Her Indian descent makes it very likely that her makeup is deliberately done to hurt Hindu sentiments. Blasphemy." Another said, “Did you not see the cross coming out of her butt? She’s hurting everyone’s sentiments, maybe on purpose, to go viral. Cheap tactics." Many online have criticised the act as profoundly disrespectful and a blatant attempt to provoke outrage for attention. “Her new song openly mocks both Hindu and Christian faiths. This is not creativity, this is pure disrespect," an angry user wrote.

Meanwhile, Canadian artist Tommy Genesis, also known as Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj, has not yet addressed the criticism she's received. Born in Vancouver, Canada, to a mixed Tamil and Swedish family, Genesis is recognised for her daring and experimental artistic approach. Her music frequently delves into themes of gender, identity, and sexuality; she has previously described herself as a ‘fetish rapper.’ In 2016, an international magazine even declared her "the internet's most rebellious underground rap queen."
