Raveena Tandon, a veteran actress in Bollywood with a career spanning over three decades, recently shed light on the stark gender pay disparity that existed in the Indian film industry during the 1990s. In a conversation with Jist News, she revealed that female actors, including herself, had to work on 15-20 films to earn as much as their male counterparts did in just one film.
In those days, the pay gap between male and female actors was staggering. While male stars commanded hefty paychecks for their roles, female actors struggled to earn a fraction of that amount. Raveena recalled, "What they would make in one film, I would make in, say, 15 films."
The disparity in pay forced female actors to work much harder and take on more projects to achieve financial parity with their male counterparts. Raveena mentioned that even popular male co-stars like Salman Khan and Aamir Khan were selective about their work due to the financial dynamics of the industry at that time.
However, Raveena expressed optimism about the changing landscape of Bollywood. With the influx of corporates into the industry, the pay structure has become more professional and equitable. She noted that the situation has improved significantly, allowing actors to focus on quality work rather than solely on financial considerations.
Raveena's comments shed light on the challenges faced by female actors in Bollywood and highlight the importance of addressing gender pay disparity in the entertainment industry. Despite the progress made, there is still work to be done to ensure that all actors are compensated fairly for their contributions.
Raveena Tandon was last seen in the film Patna Shuklla, where she portrayed the role of Tanvi Shukla, a lawyer. The film explores the education scam involving roll numbers that affect thousands of students in India. Produced by Arbaaz Khan and directed by Vivek Budakoti, Patna Shuklla is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
