Squid Game became a global fan favourite after the release of the drama on streaming giant Netflix in 2021. It went on to win the highly prestigious Emmy Award and had a high viewer rate. Its global dominance in terms of its theme, plot, and the 'doll' was discussed almost everywhere and that’s when the squid game universe saw its expansion for the first time. The Korean Netflix series got a British reality show ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ in 2023 and became an instant success becoming the top-most watched show on Netflix. 

And now the Squid Game universe has a new addition to it as the Vice President of Netflix, Mike Verdu announced on December 14, the official video game version to join the streaming giants’ gaming lineup of 2024. In a blog post, he stated, "Mike Verdu in a blog post stated, “By year’s end, we’ll have 86 games available —all included with every Netflix membership without ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees." The Squid Game video game is now joining the highly-anticipated titles such as 'Sonic Mania Plus' and 'Money Heist.' 

The streaming giant also plans to release three new Grand Theft Auto games. These are licensed from Rockstar Games and will be titled 'Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.' This video game compilation will have the fan-favourite titles: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Variety has reported that members may sign up in advance to play these games. These will be available soon on Netflix and will be free for mobile Netflix subscribers to play.

The Netflix gaming lineup for the coming year includes Squid Game adaptation along with other games such as Money Heist, Sonic Mania Plaza, and Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit. Rebel Moon-inspired games, FashionVerse, and Game Dev Tycoon are also included in the long list with almost 90 new games under development. Netflix has a long way to go with its ambitious gaming lineup that has adaptations of some popular original material.
