The story of Thandel is based on the actual occurrences of Chodipilli Musalayya, a fisherman from the Srikakulam hamlet of Kunduvanipeta. After unintentionally wandering into Pakistani territorial seas, Musalayya was imprisoned in Karachi for 22 years, which completely upended his life.
