The heart of The First Frost lies in the deeply emotional and resilient love story between Wen Yifan and Sang Yan — a tale marked by heartbreak, healing and an unbreakable bond that endures against all odds.

Wen Yifan’s journey is one of survival and strength. Despite her love for Sang Yan, she abruptly leaves him, driven by fear and trauma. Her decision stems from threats made by Che Xingde, a figure from her dark past. As Sang Yan searches desperately for her, he uncovers painful truths — Yifan had endured workplace harassment and, more disturbingly, a harrowing experience in her teenage years where Che Xingde assaulted her. In a desperate bid for freedom, she jumped from a window, sustaining a severe ankle injury, shattering her dream of becoming a ballerina.

After the incident, Yifan found refuge with Officer Chen and his daughter, Chen Xi, as her own family refused to support her. She rebuilt her life, eventually enrolling at Yihe University, but the scars remained, both physical and emotional.

In the present, Sang Yan — alongside their close friends Su Haoan and Zhong Siqiao — tirelessly searches for Yifan. She, meanwhile, finds solace in Hong Kong, teaching dance and hiding from her past. When Su Haoan and Zhong Siqiao finally locate her, Yifan gathers the courage to reach out to Sang Yan.

Their reunion is heart-wrenching and raw. Yifan reveals the full extent of her suffering, including the foot injury that ended her ballet dreams. Sang Yan, unwavering in his love, reassures her, reminding her that none of it was her fault. His support becomes her anchor, giving her the strength to return home and pursue her career as a journalist once more.

As Yifan delves into a cold case for work, she uncovers new evidence implicating Che Xingde in additional crimes, including a murder. His past finally catches up to him, and he becomes a fugitive. Determined to silence Yifan, he targets her again.

In a dramatic turn of events, Sang Yan confronts Che Xingde, resulting in him getting stabbed. With the police intervening, Che Xingde is arrested and ultimately sentenced to death. His sister, Che Yanqin, also faces imprisonment for helping him cover up his crimes.

Finally free from the shadows of her past, Wen Yifan embraces a future filled with hope and love. With Sang Yan by her side, she rediscovers her passion for dance, performing at an office event — a symbolic step toward reclaiming her lost dreams. She also severs ties with her unsupportive family, choosing to create a new life with Sang Yan.

Yifan meets Sang Yan’s family, including his sister Sang Zhi and her boyfriend Duan Jiaxu, and is welcomed with open arms. Finding a place in their family brings her the warmth and belonging she never had.

Sang Yan and Yifan move into a new home together, dreaming of marriage and a future filled with happiness. Their journey comes full circle when they visit their old school with friends Su Haoan and Zhong Siqiao, who are now a couple.

In their former classroom, Sang Yan surprises Yifan with a heartfelt video message featuring their loved ones — their friends, family, old teacher, and his mother — all sharing blessings and reminiscing about the couple’s journey from childhood to the present.

As the video ends, Sang Yan presents Yifan with a cherished keepsake from her childhood: a toy box with a dancing ballerina inside. Hidden within it is a ring. With tears of joy, Yifan says yes to his proposal, sealing their love with a kiss.

The First Frost wraps up beautifully, giving Yifan and Sang Yan the happy ending they fought so hard for. With no major loose ends, a second season seems unlikely — but not impossible. Given the show’s popularity, a sequel exploring their married life or new challenges remains a possibility. However, there’s been no official word from the cast or production team about a renewal.

For now, fans can enjoy the complete series on Youku, with all 32 episodes available, while Netflix currently streams 30 episodes.
