T.O.P, formerly of the Kpop group BIGBANG, has been making headlines once again, this time for his highly-anticipated and somewhat contentious return to the popular reality series Squid Game, in its second season. In a remarkable turn of events, Choi Seung Hyun, also known as T.O.P, broke his 11-year silence in a remarkably candid and introspective interview with Sports Kyunghang on Wednesday.
During this conversation, T.O.P directly addressed the swirling controversies surrounding his role in Squid Game Season 2, providing valuable insight into his thought process and experiences. Furthermore, he also delved into his current relationship with his former BIGBANG bandmates, shedding light on the dynamics and bonds that have evolved over time.
T.O.P shared his thoughts on his departure from BIGBANG, revealing that although he's no longer in touch with the members, he still keeps up with their activities through their content. He also reflected on past mistakes, discussed his distance from the group, and hinted at a potential music comeback in the future.
T.O.P. said, “I caused great harm to both BIGBANG and my former company due to past mistakes.” “Now, I have to move forward on my own, and I believe I must endure the criticism that comes with it. If I were to return to the team that I caused harm to, the team/members would also be labeled for the past mistakes that I made, and I wouldn’t be able to face them. The suffering within me is so great that I’ve been saying for a long time that I want to leave,” he further added.
About BIGANG: BIGBANG, one of the most iconic and influential K-pop groups, made its debut in August 2006 and rapidly rose to fame with a string of chart-topping hits, including Lies, Haru Haru, and Bang Bang Bang. These songs not only catapulted the group to superstardom but also played a pivotal role in propelling the Kpop genre onto the global stage. However, the group's trajectory took a dramatic turn in 2019, when member Seungri departed BIGBANG amid a cloud of controversy, prompting the group to go on hiatus. This hiatus was further extended when T.O.P, another key member of the group, officially exited BIGBANG in 2023, leaving the future of the group uncertain and fans eagerly awaiting any news of a potential reunion or revival.
