Vidhu Vinod Chopra REVEALS His Wife Warned 'Nobody Would Come To Watch Vikrant Massey's 12th Fail' In Cinema

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra found immense joy as his latest directorial venture, '12th Fail,' starring Vikrant Massey reached the significant milestone of completing 100 days in cinemas. Although it didn't make a significant impact on box office collections during its theatrical run, the movie gained traction as a sleeper hit following its debut on OTT platforms. To commemorate the film's completion of 100 days in theaters, a special event was organised by the team.

Adapted from a book by Anurag Pathak, '12th Fail' unfolds the inspiring story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who triumphed over extreme poverty to become an IPS officer. The film focuses on his journey and highlights the pivotal role played by his wife, IRS officer Shraddha Joshi, in his success. Vikrant Massey portrayed the character of Manoj, while Medha Shankar took on the role of Shraddha. During film's success event, Vidhu Vinod Chopra disclosed that when he was in the process of making the film, various people, including his wife and renowned film critic Anupama Chopra, suggested releasing it directly on an OTT platform as nobody will come to watch it in cinema.

He said, "100 days ago, in this very screen, we had our first show. When we talk about numbers, Rs 100 crore, now there’s Rs 500 crore, Rs 1,000 crore, Rs 2,000 crore, but to me it boils down to one thing. What is your intention? Why are you making that film? You make an honest film and it can reach those numbers. When I was making the film, I was told by everyone, including my dearest wife, to put it out on OTT!"

"She said, 'Nobody will go to see your and Vikrant's film in theatres'. She also said that the film wouldn't work because I wasn't connected with movies anymore. On top of this, trade agencies wrote that 12th Fail will have an opening of Rs 2 lakh and do a lifetime business of Rs 30 lakh only. Everyone scared me," he added.

About 12th Fail

The film draws inspiration from the real-life story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who triumphed over extreme poverty to become an officer of the Indian Police Service. Anant V Joshi takes on the character of Pritam Pandey, Anshumaan Pushkar plays Gauri Bhaiya, and Priyanshu Chatterjee assumes the role of DSP Dushyant Singh. The supporting cast includes Harish Khanna, Sarita Joshi, Sanjay Bishnoi, Vikas Divyakirti, Vijay Kumar Dogra, Perry Chhabra, Neeraj Kalra, Darius Chinoy, and many others.
