Tamil cinema directors featuring Mani Ratnam, Vetri Maaran, Sudha Kongara, Mari Selvaraj, Madonne Ashwin, and PS Vinothraj recently united for a YouTube discussion. During this, Ponniyin Selvan director slammed social media trolls, noting how some individuals use these platforms to spread negativity through trolling. He highlighted the importance of positive comments amidst the negativity and dismissed certain online debates, likening them to frivolous arguments, particularly referencing fan rivalry over box office collections involving actors Vijay and Ajith. Trisha, who has worked with both actors, responded to Mani Ratnam's remarks.

When the subject on social media popped up during a round table discussion with Galatta Plus, the celebrated director said, "Social media has the privilege of anonymity so people are just spitting venom. It is only negativity that coming from there. Now, you told me that in Thirunelveli and Nagercoil people are not talking about the box office collection of the film but discussing if the film is good or not, now that you have told me. I am very happy about it," addressing Karnan and Maamannan director Mari Selvaraj.

"So a debate on social media is like a random roadside argument. If it is a serious platform where it is being debated, then you can have your opinion. But this (debate that) ‘I like Ajith, I like Vijay’ doesn’t make any sense," the filmmaker added. While Trisha did not speak or commented over the issue, she liked several videos of Mani Ratnam's statement making rounds on internet, indirectly agreeing to the filmmaker.

Also, these directors, known for their diverse filmmaking styles, expressed mutual respect for each other's work and discussed the distinction between achieving commercial success and creating a personally fulfilling project.

On the professional front, Mani Ratnam last directed Ponniyin Selvan: II. Based on the novel of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy, the historical drama centers around the power struggle in the Chola dynasty. The film stars Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Jayaram and Aishwarya Lakshmi among others. Next, he is working on a film with Kamal Haasan. The film is titled 'Thug Life'.
