Television producer Vinta Nanda has raised concerns about the Oscars' nomination process, calling it "flawed" and questioning the credit allocation for films. Her remarks come in the wake of Anuja, a short film backed by Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga, securing a nomination for Best Live-Action Short at the 97th Academy Awards.

Taking to social media, Vinta highlighted how well-connected individuals often overshadow the contributions of the original creators. She wrote, “Curators walk away with the Oscar nominations and awards as producers, while the struggle of the artists and their producers is eclipsed. What kind of a world are we living in?"

In a conversation with News18, Vinta elaborated on her views, pointing out that the primary producers of Anuja are not prominently credited compared to Priyanka and Guneet. She remarked, “Their names are the first ones listed as producers, but they weren’t involved in the making of the film. It’s becoming a trend where recognizable names with great networks join projects after they are completed, taking credit and overshadowing the real creators.”

Vinta clarified that her criticism is not aimed personally at Priyanka or Guneet, acknowledging their achievements. “They’re brilliant in their own right and have done stellar work. But they’re part of a flawed system where festivals and awards prioritize influential names over real creators. This diminishes the recognition for the writers, directors, and producers who actually make the films.”

She also highlighted what she perceives as a conflict of interest in Guneet’s association with the Academy. “The Oscars share a symbiotic relationship with Guneet. While she bridges the gap between filmmakers and the Academy, this system risks overlooking other deserving films and creators.”

Vinta emphasized the need for a fairer system that highlights lesser-known talents. “There must be 20-30 other great films that never get noticed. Festivals and awards need to actively seek out fresh talent instead of relying on endorsements from established names. This unhealthy ecosystem puts undue pressure on individuals like Guneet and Priyanka while sidelining emerging creators.”

She concluded by urging industry stakeholders to introspect. “The system needs to evolve to ensure that the real storytellers—the ones who pour their creativity and effort into making a film—receive the recognition they deserve.”
