New Delhi | Jagran Entertainment Desk: Popular Bollywood music director and composer Anu Malik, who was on a break from the tinsel town post the sexual harassment allegations imposed on him, opened up about his life during his latest special and interesting interview with Dainik Jagran. In the interview, he talked about many untouched aspects of his life and also talked about his journey in the music industry.

Anu Malik, who came to Delhi to attend an event, where he was awarded the ‘Doctor of Music Award’, speaking about his musical journey said, “there was a time when I was not getting work in films because people started to consider me as outdated”.

He also spoke about the time when his career going through a downfall, and what was his reaction towards that downfall and how he cope-up with the bad phase. He also told us about the time when despite getting a Filmfare award for the film ‘Main Hoon Na’ in 2005, he was not getting work in the industry. Anu Malik also shared the success mantra for the newcomers in the music industry. Listen to Anu Malik’s interview here:

Speaking about the ‘Doctor of Music’ award he received during the event, Anu Malik said, “I feel honored to receive this award. This is my 42nd year in the music industry, yet I was running away from taking this award because it has the word Doctor, which is a great honor for me. But, after the organisers convinced me that I should accept this award”.

“The people who gave me this award started telling me about my journey and my music, yet I questioned them that why they are giving me this award, even though I have done work in around 400 films. The organisers told me that the music I have done is amazing and I deserve to get this award. It made me happy that someone knows my journey and someone is understanding my journey,” he added.

He further said, “I have composed music for films like the ‘Border, LoC Kargil, and Main Hun Na’. I started my journey in 1977 at the age of 14, and continues the journey to this day and for the rest of my life”.

Anu Malik during the interview also talked about the change the music industry has seen as compared to the times when he started creating music. Throwing light on the changes and the benefits of these changes, he said, “when we used to listen to songs of RD Burman, Rafi Saab, Kishore Da, we learn by listening to them, we don’t have resources to get the music. There were cassettes, discs, and we were bound to that limit. But in recent times, the newcomers have the resources, they have phones, music players. The only difficulty is the same ‘creating original music’. But with those resources, it becomes easy for the new generation to get to that tune which they needed. With platforms like YouTube, the youngsters can showcase their talents and get noticed through it. But at our time, stealing work under the nose of RD Burman, Kishore da is really a tough task”.

Anu Malik talked about the time when he was out of work despite receiving the Filmfare award for Main Hu Na, he said, “I have done songs which rocked the charts, but after 2005, my life turned upside down. For the next eight years I was out of work. But what keeps me going is the passion for music. I used to sit with my instruments and imagine that a very big producer is sitting in front of me and I have to make him like the song so that he will take me in his film. My wife used to support me a lot, which made me teary because of the fact that I was not getting the work”.

“But at that time, I created some tunes which were appreciated by many producers when I showed them. One example is Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from Dum Laga Ke Haisha. I never like saying that ‘my time has gone or that was my time, I still believe that this moment is my time and it will last forever, so I have to take everything out from it. I think this approach has helped in keeping my music young despite my ever-increasing age”.

Anu Malik also shared the success mantra for the newcomers, and said “I followed one rule in these 42 years of my journey, that whatever you are creating, it should touch the heart of the listener, and he/she should hum the song as soon as the listener gets to hear that song anywhere”.
