Fans of the iconic Broadway musical Wicked are ecstatic about its much-anticipated movie adaptation, which hit theatres on November 22, 2024. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film brings the captivating story of Elphaba and Glinda to the big screen. While the movie is currently available only in theatres, questions about its online streaming release are already surfacing. Here's what we know so far about the Wicked OTT release.
Wicked is unlikely to stream on Netflix in the near future. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the movie falls under the studio's exclusive agreement with its streaming platform, Peacock. As a result, Netflix subscribers eager to watch Wicked may need to consider other options. Despite being a musical, Wicked is not part of Disney’s collection. Universal Pictures retains exclusive distribution rights and the film is expected to follow the studio's standard streaming route, heading to Peacock after its theatrical run.
Although no official streaming date has been announced, Universal’s past releases provide some insight. For example, Twisters, another Universal film, landed on Peacock approximately four months after its theatrical release. If Wicked follows a similar schedule, it could be available on Peacock by March 2025.
Fans can expect a digital purchase or rental option for Wicked around late December 2024, with its streaming debut on Peacock likely in early spring. However, given the excitement surrounding the film, Universal may decide to extend its theatre exclusivity to maximize its box-office potential.
Wicked reimagines the land of Oz from the perspectives of two witches, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande), exploring their complex friendship before and after Dorothy’s arrival. With its rich storytelling and unforgettable songs, the movie promises a magical cinematic experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike. For now, Wicked is a theatrical exclusive, and fans will need to wait a few months for its OTT debut on Peacock.
