GMDA Plans Elevated Roads In Old Gurugram To Tackle Traffic Jams, Pollution; DPR Tender Soon

Efforts have begun to elevate the main roads in the Old Gurugram area to provide relief from traffic jams and control pollution. A consultancy firm will soon be selected to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) PC Meena has permitted the start of the tender process for the selection of the firm. 

The tender process is expected to begin next week. The authority is trying to start the work on the ground as soon as possible so that people can get relief from traffic jams and pollution. In recent years, traffic pressure in the city has increased to such an extent that travelling even a few metres has become a significant challenge. Some roads experience traffic jams 24 hours a day.

In light of this, last month, MLA Mukesh Sharma and GMDA CEO PC Meena toured various areas of Old Gurugram city. During the tour, they both realised that even after the metro's expansion in the Old Gurugram area, traffic pressure will not be significantly reduced. 

The only way to reduce traffic pressure is to elevate the main roads. MLA Mukesh Sharma prominently raised this issue before Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at the Viksit Gurugram Maharally held at Company Bagh Maidan. The impact of this was seen within 15 days. The permission to start the tender process for selecting a consultancy firm is an indication that work on the ground will begin soon. 

According to the proposed plan, the road from Rajiv Chowk to Chintpurni Mandir via Old Railway Road will be elevated. Additionally, the road from Chintpurni Mandir to Lieutenant Atul Kataria Chowk via Sheetla Mata Road will also be elevated. To reduce traffic pressure on Old Delhi Road, the approximately five-kilometre-long road from Lieutenant Atul Kataria Chowk to the Dundahera border will be elevated. There is also a plan to elevate the road from Maharana Pratap Chowk to IFFCO Chowk via Sukrali village. 

Once elevated, only local traffic from surrounding areas will remain below. Currently, it often takes half an hour to an hour to travel from Rajiv Chowk to Chintpurni Mandir, whereas it should take a maximum of five to seven minutes. 

Both sides of Old Delhi Road, from Lieutenant Atul Kataria Chowk to the Dundahera border, are densely populated. After the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, Old Delhi Road is the most used route for people travelling towards Delhi. For this reason, there are constant traffic jams here 24 hours a day.

During the election campaign, I promised the people that I would try to get the city's main roads elevated. Keeping this in mind, I put forward the demand to elevate the main roads before Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at the Viksit Gurugram Maha Rally. Efforts have begun in this direction. 

“Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini wants the traffic jams in Cyber City to be reduced as soon as possible. The metro expansion in Old Gurugram has already started. Elevating the main roads will not only reduce traffic jams but also pollution,” said Mukesh Sharma, MLA, Gurugram.
