The municipal corporations of Gurugram and Manesar are set to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to monitor and maintain the cities' road infrastructure. A new road audit project, launched in collaboration with IT company Nagarro and the AI platform Road Athena, will use AI-equipped vehicles to automatically identify issues such as potholes, encroachments, poor footpaths and damaged signage.
Corporation officials believe this initiative will be a revolutionary step in transforming the process of maintaining road infrastructure. The project officially began on Saturday, launching from Ward number 21 and Ward number 27 of the Municipal Corporation Gurugram.
How The Technology Works
Under this project, specially equipped vehicles will patrol the roads of Cyber City Gurugram and Manesar, capturing high-resolution images and video. This data will be fed into the Road Athena AI platform, which uses advanced computer vision algorithms to automatically detect, classify, and geo-tag road defects. This technology replaces traditional manual surveys with fast, accurate, and data-driven reporting.
The AI will generate a digital map of all identified problems, complete with severity ratings, which will be accessible to municipal officials on a centralised dashboard. This will allow for the efficient prioritisation of repair work, leading to timely maintenance and a reduction in accidents.
Official Statement
"This joint initiative by the Municipal Corporation Gurugram and the Municipal Corporation Manesar is a major step towards smart, safe, environmental protection, and pollution control," said Yash Jaluka, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Gurugram. "In the time to come, this project will establish a new standard for road infrastructure management."
