In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has partnered with IIT Gandhinagar to prepare a long-term scientific solution to the city’s chronic waterlogging problem.
A one-year MoU has been signed under which an expert team from IIT will be stationed in Gurugram to conduct a comprehensive technical study of the drainage system and create a master drainage model for the entire city.
As part of the project, IIT experts will map every waterlogging-prone zone, stormwater drain, channel, and existing drainage structure in the city. The master model will provide a scientific blueprint detailing where new pumping stations, underground chambers, and drains need to be constructed.
The study will focus on:
* Examination of the existing drainage network
- Assessment of design flaws, capacity gaps, and structural deficiencies in the current system.
* Technical recommendations
-A phased engineering plan outlining specific improvements needed in different areas.
* Scientific foundation for future planning
-All upcoming MCG drainage projects will be based on this model to ensure proper utilisation of funds and resources.
The Corporation has already handed over comprehensive GIS data, including information on topography, drainage lines, sewer connectivity, encroachments, and waterlogging hotspots- to the IIT team. Using this, the experts will prepare a high-accuracy drainage model.
Gurugram faces severe flooding every monsoon, with junctions such as Narsinghpura, Hero Honda Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, and Sector Road regularly going underwater.
Officials say that narrow drains, unplanned construction, encroachments, and mixing of sewage with stormwater have crippled the existing network. MCG now aims to move away from temporary solutions like deploying pumps each year.
“This is the first time such a comprehensive partnership has been formed with a technical institute. The IIT team will study the entire city to prepare a master drainage model, which the Corporation will use as a basis for plans. IIT has already given its preliminary presentation,” said Pradeep Dahiya, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Gurugram.
