The Public Works Department (PWD) has begun construction work on the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur State Highway-18 to improve road connectivity in the Kharkhoda region. On Monday, the department started building a wall on the Pai Minor culvert passing through Kharkhoda, marking the beginning of on-ground work.
The Rs 7 crore project covers a 3.95-km stretch of the Kharkhoda-Delhi road and is expected to be completed within six months. Of this, 400 meters will be a concrete road. To ensure uninterrupted progress, the department has restricted the movement of heavy vehicles on the route while keeping regular traffic, including cars, two-wheelers, and school buses, operational.
The highway is being developed in two phases. Work has already begun on the section from the KMP Expressway to Gate No. 1 of IMT Kharkhoda, which is being expanded into a four-lane road. HSIDC has provided both the land and funds for this section to make it durable enough for heavy industrial traffic in the future.
PWD officials said construction will soon begin on the remaining stretches, from Kharkhoda to the KMP turnoff and from IMT Gate No. 1 to the Auchandi border. Information boards have been installed directing heavy vehicles to use alternative routes, including Kanwali-Nahra and Baroona-Pai-Sohti roads.
