The name of this auspicious Hindu festival comes from 'Dhan,' meaning wealth, and 'Teras,' meaning 13th. Devotees worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi for blessings and prosperity. According to Hindu rituals, purchasing valuable and auspicious items on this day is considered highly rewarding and auspicious. People purchase new home, electronics, vehicles and jewellery and utensils made of Gold and Silver on this day. In some places, Dhanteras is also celebrated as Dhanwantari Jayanti, honoring the God of Ayurveda - Lord Dhanwantari.
This year, there is confusion regarding the exact date of Dhanteras due to the Trayodashi tithi falling on two days - 18th and 19th October 2025. Danteras or Dhan Trayodashi is a highly sacred festival in Hinduism celebrated with utmost faith and making significant purchases. Celebrated two days before Diwali, Dhanteras is a sacred day to worship Lord Kuber, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanwantri for wealth, abundance and good health. The best time for Lakshmi puja and Dhanwantri Puja on the day of Dhanteras is during Pradosh Kaal, which is about 2.5 hours after sunset, when 'Sthir Lagan' is present. Hindu legends suggest that if the Dhanteras puja is performed at this time, Goddess Lakshmi is pleased and stays at the abode of the devotees. This Hindu festival is very important for Hindu devotees as it is closely linked with auspiciousness and abundance. Homes are filled with happiness, lights, and celebrations.

Spiritual Significance And Legends Associated With This Day
In Hindu belief, Dhantrayodashi is regarded as a highly auspicious day. It is said that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, who is the god of wealth, emerged from the ocean when the milky sea was churned. Since then, devotees pray to them for blessings to have a good and successful life.
Many think buying gold or silver on this day brings Goddess Lakshmi into your home, bringing positive energy and riches. It's also seen as a great time to start new businesses or buy things like houses, cars, or jewellery, which symbolise new beginnings and a prosperous future. This holiday brings happiness and fills homes with a divine feeling.
Rituals Associated With Dhanteras Or Dhantrayodashi
Devotees start preparing for Dhanteras a few days ahead of time. They clean and decorate with lamps, lights, colourful patterns, and flowers. On the sacred day of Dhanteras and Dhan Trayodashi, families pray to Lakshmi and Kuber, hoping to receive the blessings for wealth and luck. They make tasty sweets and snacks to offer to the deities. Some devotees also observe the fast until sunset on Dhanteras.
Devotees offer Haldi Gaanth, yellow mustard seeds, coriander seeds and salt to Lord Dhanwantri to receive blessings of Good Health. There are many significant rituals associated with Dhanteras, one of them being lighting Yamadeep or Yama Deepam. Devotees light a diya for Lord Yama, the god of Death, outside their homes to seek his blessings for protection and avoiding premature deaths or Akal Mrityu. In Maharashtra, a special offering of dry coriander seed powder and jaggery is made on the occasion of Dhanteras. Once prayers are complete, they share this with loved ones. The day celebrates light, good fortune, riches, and blessings from Goddess Lakshmi.
