Diwali 2025 Date: Deepawali or Diwali, also known as the festival of Lights is celebrated annually on the Kartik Amavasya. This sacred event is one of the most important Hindu festivals and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Rama in addition to Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati and Lord Kuber. Amidst the pomp, enthusiasm, firecrackers and lights, Lakshmi Puja holds a special significance. On Diwali night, homes fill with warmth and people open their doors to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. However, due to a rare planetary alignment, there is some ambiguity regarding the exact date of Diwali and Diwali Lakshmi Puja.

In 2025, the Amavasya date will fall on both October 20 and 21, creating some uncertainty about when Diwali should be celebrated. This article clarifies the correct dates for Diwali Puja in 2025, including the auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja, as well as the dates of Dhanteras and Choti Diwali.

Diwali 2025 Date: Is Diwali Puja on 20th or 21st October 2025?

Certain astrologers from Varanasi, Ujjain, and Bhopal have clarified that Diwali should be celebrated on Monday, October 20th. This is because the new moon or Amavasya tithi will end before sunset on October 21st, so there is no justification for celebrating Diwali or worshipping Lakshmi on this day.

Diwali will also be celebrated on this day at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. Since the new moon date on October 20th falls during Pradosh and Nishita Muhurat, worshipping Maa Lakshmi on this day is considered auspicious. Hence, the Diwali Puja 2025 date falls on 20th October 2025.

Diwali 2025 Date: Diwali Puja Muhurat

Traditionally, Lakshmi Pujan is performed on the night of Diwali when Amavasya tithi falls. The puja is preferably performed during Pradosh and Nishita Kaal. This year, Amavasya Tithi will start from 3:44 PM on 20th October and will continue till 5:43 PM on 21st October. The Amavasya Tithi will fall during Pradosh and Nishita Kaal on 20th October. Therefore, celebrating Diwali on this day is advised is as per the scriptures.

As per the Panchang, The Pradosh Kaal Muhurat for Lakshmi Puja on Diwali 2025 falls between 05:46 PM to 08:18 PM. The Nishita Kaal Muhurat for Diwali Puja falls between 11:41 PM to 12:31 AM, 21st October.

Diwali 2025 Date: Dates For Dhanteras And Choti Diwali

This year, Dhateras 2025 date falls on 18th October 2025 and Choti Diwali or Naraka Chatudashi falls on 19th October 2025 respectively.

Why Diwali 2025 Should Not Be Celebrated On 21st October 2025?

This year, Amavasya will end before sunset, and Pratipada Tithi will begin in the evening. On 21st October, the Amavasya tithi will neither occur during Pradosh Kaal nor during the Nishita Kaal. Diwali puja is performed on the night of the new moon, so it will not be celebrated on the 21st.
