Karwa Chauth 2025: Karva Chauth, also known as Karwa Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi is a Hindu festival celebrated by married Hindu women on the Chaturthi tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha. Women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands. The festival is marked in various regions, including Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and is known as Atla Tadde in Andhra Pradesh. “Karva” refers to a small earthen water pot, while “chauth” means fourth, reflecting the day of the Krishna Paksha. In Sanskrit texts, it is called Karaka Chaturthi, highlighting devotion, love, and tradition central to married life. This year, Karwa Chauth will be observed on 10th October 2025.
According to Hindu tradition, married women must observe some essential dos and don’ts on Karwa Chauth to avoid displeasing Maa Gauri and Goddess Karwa. Below, we have curated a list of essential guidelines that must be followed on Karwa Chauth:
Karwa Chauth 2025: Dos And Don’ts Married Women Must Follow
- Women observing Karwa Chauth should wake up before sunrise, take a refreshing bath, and purify themselves. Only after this preparation should they consume Sargi, the pre-fast meal that sustains them through the day.
- Sargi is the most important part of the fast. While some women may skip it depending on family traditions, it is usually prepared by the mother-in-law and includes nutritious and sattvic items such as fruits, dry fruits, and parathas to maintain energy throughout the fast.
- According to Hindu beliefs, married women must not break the fast before moonrise, or they lose the spiritual merit. The fast is considered incomplete without offering Arghya to the Moon. If the moon is not visible, silver coins or a depiction of the moon on Lord Shiva’s head can be used.
- Married Hindu women must wear bright and auspicious colours such as red, green, yellow, orange, pink, peach, or maroon. These colours are believed to symbolise marital happiness, love, and prosperity. Do not wear black, white, or dark colours.
- The fast is dedicated to Chauth Mata. In the evening, women gather for a collective puja and listen to the Karwa Chauth story. This ritual is an essential aspect of the celebration, reinforcing devotion, unity, and cultural tradition.

- Mehendi is an important Karwa Chauth tradition representing marital bliss and auspiciousness. Women adorn their hands and feet with intricate henna designs, with the belief that deeper colour indicates a stronger bond of love between husband and wife.
- If a woman begins menstruating during the fast, she should neither touch Chauth Mata’s idol nor offer Arghya to the moon. She may continue observing the fast without performing the puja, as ignoring this rule is believed to affect the spiritual merit of the fast.
- Hindu tradition advises against sleeping during the day while observing any fast, including Karwa Chauth. This rule does not apply to elders or those who are unwell. Healthy, married women should remain awake to maintain the discipline and sanctity of the fast.
- Sharp items such as needles, scissors, and knives should not be used on Karwa Chauth. According to Hindu beliefs, handling such objects during the fast is considered inauspicious and may disturb the positive energies associated with the day.
- Married women must wear the sixteen traditional adornments, including sindoor, bindi, bangles, anklets, toe rings, and mangalsutra. These ornaments represent marital status and are believed to bring prosperity and well-being.
Observing Karwa Chauth with devotion, following the dos and don’ts, and including all traditional rituals strengthens marital bonds and invites blessings. From Sargi to puja, mehendi, and auspicious 10 shringar adornments, every practice nurtures love, prosperity and blessings for blissful married life.
