Manipur Crisis: The Manipur violence has claimed 306 lives since May 2023, with 49 people still missing, state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam told the Assembly on Thursday. Replying to a question by BJP MLA Sapam Ranjan Singh on the second day of the ongoing Assembly session, Konthoujam said these figures were recorded till August 31, 2026.

Konthoujam said since the violence began on May 3, 2023, 306 people have died, and 49 people have gone missing as of August 31. The prolonged violence led to large-scale displacement of people and several important political developments in the state.

Clash Between Meitei And Kuki-Jo

The ethnic clash between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities started on May 3, 2023, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meitei Dominants Imphal Valley

The Meitei people constitute about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mainly in the Imphal valley, while the tribal population, including the Nagas and Kukis, constitute about 40 per cent and live mainly in the hill districts.

Manipur Saw Change Of Leadership

Amid the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, then Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned, leading to the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur on February 13, 2025. The 60-member assembly was subsequently suspended. President's rule was lifted on 4 February 2026, leading to the formation of a new government with BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh as Chief Minister.

Fresh Violence In Kangpokpi

Manipur's Kangpokpi district saw a spell of violent clashes between ethnic groups. On Tuesday, around 30 houses were set ablaze, and a villager sustained a bullet injury as an armed group attacked three Liangmai Naga villages in Kangpokpi. The violence came a day after the killing of three civilians, including two women, at a hill village in Kangpokpi. Militants armed with sophisticated weapons attacked N Teikhang village under T Waichong sub-division in the Kuki-majority district around 9.30 am on Monday.
