In a significant blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seven of its Rajya Sabha members resigned on Friday, April 24, to merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This group comprises six MPs from AAP's Punjab quota and one from its Delhi quota.

The AAP has a total of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, six of whom have quit to merge with the BJP. Amid this shift, only one MP from the Punjab quota has remained with the party and maintained his loyalty to Arvind Kejriwal.

Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal: The Lone MP From Punjab Quota

According to Jagran.com, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has a total of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, including Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Rajendra Gupta, Vikramjit Sahney, Harbhajan Singh, and Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal. In a major political shift on Friday, April 24, six of these MPs left the party to join the BJP.

While Raghav Chadha managed to persuade five other MPs from Punjab and one MP from Delhi to make the move, he was unable to bring Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal into the fold.

Sources suggest that Seechewal was offered a similar opportunity to switch parties but declined, choosing to remain with Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP. Following this move, several party supporters and social media users are praising Seechewal, calling him a prime example of political loyalty.

Who Is Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal?

Born on February 2, 1962, in Seechewal village, Kapurthala, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal became involved in social service after leaving college in 1981. Confronted by the poor state of his village's roads, he took up a shovel and began levelling the rough roads himself. His environmental activism earned him a spot on Time magazine's 2008 list of 30 environmental heroes. The Indian government honoured him with the Padma Shri in January 2017.

Recognising his contributions, the AAP government nominated him to the Rajya Sabha in May 2022, where he was elected unopposed. He began his term in the Rajya Sabha on July 4, 2022, and will continue until July 5, 2028.
