Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, recently scolded by the Supreme Court for deaying ten bills for over three years, has sparked a fresh controversy after allegedly asking students at an event to chant “Jai Shri Ram.” The move has drawn sharp criticism from the ruling party and academic bodies, with one group calling for his removal.
"On this day, let us pay tribute to the one who was a great devotee of Shri Ram. I would say and you would say Jai Shri Ram," he said on Saturday at the event.
In a statement, non-profit SPCSS-TN (State Platform for Common School System - Tamil Nadu) said, "RN Ravi violated his oath of office. He failed to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions. RN Ravi should be removed from the Office of Governor of Tamil Nadu forthwith for deliberately violating Article 159 of the Constitution of India".
Senior Congress leader Sasikanth Senthil, in a post on X, mocked the Governor.
"After being slammed by the Supreme Court and blocked by the State Government, he's now resorting to stunts like making students chant 'Jai Shri Ram' just to irritate the system," read a rough translation of his post.
"Clearly frustrated, he's sending a message that "Even if the courts rule against me, I will find other ways to push my agenda." It's a dangerous mix of arrogance and defiance that undermines democratic institutions and the principles of the Constitution!," he added.
The controversy around RN Ravi’s comments came just days after the Supreme Court criticized the Tamil Nadu Governor for holding back 10 bills passed by the state Assembly, calling it "illegal" in a major ruling.
The court said governors can’t just sit on bills forever and that doing so goes against the Constitution. This was seen as a big win for the DMK government, which has often clashed with Governor Ravi.
