Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Update: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the remaining stretch of Phase 2 of the Ahmedabad metro on Sunday evening. The inauguration at Mahatma Mandir metro station will complete the link between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, two key cities of Gujarat. The extension of metro services is likely to boost the regional connectivity and improve the financial activities. The stretch is set to provide relief to thousands of commuters of Gandhinagar and nearby cities by cutting the travel time and reducing the traffic congestion. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has stated that several other regions will also be connected with the metro services in the upcoming years.
While providing details, the authority stated that the stretch extends from Sector 10A to Mahatma Mandir, connecting several key regions of the city. With the inauguration of the remaining stretch of Phase 2, the metro will pass through five new stations—Akshardham, Old Secretariat, Sector-16, Sector-24, and Mahatma Mandir. The metro services will provide convenience to thousands of commuters of these regions by cutting the travel time.

With the completion of this stretch, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro service has been expanded to 68 kilometers across 54 stations. Earlier in September 2024, PM Modi inaugurated a 20.8-kilometer section of Phase 2, connecting Motera to Sector-1 and GNLU to GIFT City. While inaugurating the stretch, the prime minister stated that the metro services in these regions will significantly benefit the residents.
Apart from this, the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation has finalised a detailed project report (DPR) for fresh plans to link the metro services into the GIFT City and the airport. For GIFT City, the extension will be around 7 km. It is expected to be completed at a cost of Rs. 2,300 crore. The extension into GIFT City will be linked to the current GNLU-GIFT City metro line.
