Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Minister Rushikesh Patel on Tuesday shared a moving story of a couple killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash, an incident which claimed 241 lives. Patel said that the DNA samples of the couple, who settled in London in 1978, were identified side by side.

Miten Patel, son of Ashok and Shobhana Patel, flew down from London for the identification of his parents through DNA sampling. When he was about the fly back to London with the mortal remains of his father after the identification, Miten received another call stating that his mother had been identified too.

“Ashok and Shobhana Patel, a couple settled in the UK since 1978, tragically lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Their son, Miten Patel, flew down from London to identify his father's body through DNA testing, a confirmation he received on Father’s Day. While preparing to take his father's mortal remains back, fate intervened. Just as he was about to leave, a second call came, the 99th DNA match was his mother, Shobhana Patel,” Rushikesh posted on X.

“In a poignant twist, the couple who spent their entire lives together were identified side by side in death, DNA samples numbered 98 and 99. Miten emotionally shared, “Even in death, my mother didn’t let my father return home alone,” he added.

Miten departed for London with the mortal remains of both his parents. He thanked the Gujarat Government Civil Hospital and the FSL team for their cooperation.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed that the DNA samples of 144 victims in the Air India plane crash have been successfully matched as of 12 pm on Tuesday. The mortal remains of 83 victims were handed over to their families.
