Ahmedabad Plane Crash Update: Last rites of Gujarat’s ex-Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will be held on Monday after he, along with 240 other Air India passengers travelling to London, was killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash. The funeral will be held with full state honours. Apart from the funeral with state honours, a one-day state mourning will also be observed in memory of the leader.
The body of ex-CM Rupani was identified through DNA matching three days after Air India’s Boeing 787-Dreamliner carrying him crashed shortly after takeoff. The work of identifying victims of one of the worst aviation disasters by forensic experts through matching DNA with samples collected from relatives is currently going on.
Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed the identification of Vijay Raupani’s body on Sunday morning.
An Air India flight, AI171 of the Boeing 787-Dreamliner fleet, met with one of the worst aviation disasters on Thursday at nearly 1:39 pm, shortly after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The plane was bound for Gatwick in London with 242 individuals on board, including 12 crew members. The Air India flight crashed just after the perimeter of the airport into the hostel mess of BJ Medical College, seconds after it departed.
All the passengers and several students succumbed to the accident except a British passenger of Indian origin who was sitting near the emergency exit on Seat 11A. The plane carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britishers, 7 Portuguese and 1 Canadian along with 12 crew members.
The parent company of Air India, the Tata Group, has announced a compensation of 1 crore to the family of each victim. The work of identifying bodies is going on by matching DNA samples before handing them over to relatives.
