Country's premier public health institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, has suspended the head of its Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department following a harassment complaint by a female nurse officer.

The action was taken against Dr AK Bishoi after a series of complaints from the AIIMS Nurses' Union reached the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

The allegations in the complaints include sexual harassment, use of vulgar language, and workplace intimidation. The institute administration has handed over the charge of the CTVS department to Dr V. Devagourou with immediate effect. The suspension order cited a complaint dated September 30 from the victim nurse and Nurses' Union.

The order stated,"In view of the complaint dated 30.09.2025 received from a female nursing officer of the Department of CTVS against Dr. A.K. Bisoi, Professor and Head of CTVS, and the representations in that regard received from the AIIMS Nurses' Union dated 30.09.2025, 04.10.2025, and 07.10.2025, the Director has assigned the charge of Head of the Department of CTVS to Dr. V. On October 9, the union escalated the matter by forwarding the complaint to the PMO. In a complaint to PMO, the union accused the institute of inaction and described the situation as "a case of workplace bullying and sexual harassment."

A senior doctor said that the instance is first in the institute's recent history where a department head has been removed from the position over such allegations.

Dr Bishoi has been relieved of his duties and the inquiry is underway. "The matter will now be referred to the institute’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) for further investigation," the official was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

Dr Bishoi has been known for controversies and similar allegations since 2009. In that year, he was suspended by the Union Health Ministry for alleged involvement in irregular activities.

Similarly, in 2019, a female nurse accused him of harassment. But no disciplinary actions were followed.
