Air India on Saturday announced an interim payment of Rs 25 lakh to each of the families of the deceased and survivors to meet the iommediate financial needs. This payment will be in addition to Rs 1 crore already announced by the Tata Sons in the wake of a tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad that killed all but one of 242 individuals onboard.
In a statement, the airline said, "Air India stands in solidarity with the families of the passengers who tragically lost their lives in the recent accident. Our teams on the ground are doing everything possible to extend care and support during this incredibly difficult time."
"As part of our continued efforts, Air India will be providing an interim payment of ₹25 lakh or approximately 21,000 GBP each to the families of the deceased and to the survivor, to help address immediate financial needs. This is in addition to the ₹1 crore or approximately 85,000 GBP support already announced by Tata Sons," the airline added.
Expressing grief over the unfortunate crash, theairline added, "All of us at Air India are deeply saddened by this loss. We mourn with the families, loved ones, and everyone affected."
On Thursday, the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers, including 12 crew members, crashed in the Meghaninangar area shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad International Airport on Thursday afternoon. The plane crashed into the BJ Medical College Hostel, where students and doctors were having lunch. So far over 270 bodies have been recovered and sent to the hospital.
The airline had already confirmed that 241 passengers on board lost their lives. One passenger sitting at seat number 11A is the lone survivor. Speaking about the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the inferno creasted due to burning of fuel led to rise in temperature up to 1,000 degreed Celsius and hence the rescue operation became difficult.
On Saturday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu held first press conference after the tragic incident and said that the black box was recovered and was under investigation. He added that all theories will be tested to find the cause of the crash.
Apart from this, Secretary of the Civil Aviation Ministry Samir Kumar Sinha confirmed that the pilot had sent a Mayday call; however, the aircraft lost contact with the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) within seconds.
