Air India flight AI191 on 22 October which departed from Mumbai to Newark had to turn back mid-air after the flight crew detected a possible technical issue. The aircraft returned to Mumbai as a precautionary measure and landed safely without incident.

Following the incident, both AI191 and its return journey AI144 from Newark to Mumbai were cancelled. Air India has assured that all passengers in Mumbai impacted by the disruption were accommodated in hotels and rebooked on the next available flights, either with Air India or partner airlines.

Passengers waiting to board AI144 from Newark were informed of the cancellation and are currently being assisted with alternative travel arrangements.

A spokesperson for Air India said that the safety of passengers and crew remains the airline’s highest priority.

The return of the aircraft was a standard precautionary action taken in response to the suspected technical snag, and full inspections are underway to ensure the aircraft’s fitness before it is cleared to fly again.
