A video is going viral on social media showing a 24-year-old passenger at Palakkad Junction in Kerala who had a frightening experience on October 17 while traveling on the Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Vivek Express. The passenger’s jaw dislocated mid-journey, leaving him unable to close his mouth and in intense pain. Railway doctor Dr Jithin PS swiftly treated the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation in under three minutes, allowing the passenger to continue his journey safely.
The incident took place late at night when the young passenger yawned, causing his jaw to dislocate. Alarmed, a relative quickly informed the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE), who immediately contacted railway authorities at Palakkad Junction.
By 2:30 am, as the train reached the station, ENT surgeon Dr Jithin PS, Divisional Medical Officer at Palakkad Railway Hospital, was already on the platform. Acting swiftly, he diagnosed the jaw dislocation and performed a manual reduction within minutes, a procedure that realigns the jaw by applying controlled pressure.

Such dislocations are fairly common and can happen when the mouth opens too wide, like during yawning.
Southern Railways shared a video of the treatment, which quickly went viral, earning praise for the railways’ prompt response at an early hour. The clip ends with the passenger shaking hands with Dr Jithin, testing his jaw movement, and expressing heartfelt thanks for the successful treatment. The procedure followed established medical guidelines, including those referenced in resources like the MSD Manuals.
Netizens Reactions
“Excellent job by the doctor, right on the spot. A friend’s very elderly mother used to have this problem all the time. We used to immediately take her to the hospital emergency room, once a dentist came home and fixed it. The lady later on got dementia coupled with schizophrenia,it was so traumatic for my friend to see his dear mother in such suffering. She passed away and so did my friend in a few months and couldn’t continue without his mom. He was too young to go,” user commented on the post while sharing the similar incident.
Another user said, “To everyone, just because you saw how it's fixed doesn't mean you can also do it. Please leave it to professionals or you may lose the ability to chew food for the rest of your lives.”

"I suffer from TMJ and this is dam painful. I had to suffer for around four hours as there was no doctor around. Two shots of muscle relaxants helped in the end. It is a terrible feeling. Kudos to the doc and timely help," a third user added.
