Ahmedabad Air India Plane Crash: Air India flight AI-171, operating between Ahmedabad and London Gatwick with 242 passengers, crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad airport on June 12. The visuals from the incident, showing thick plumes of smoke from the ground, have surfaced on the internet. Ambulances arrived at the spot and were taking people to the nearest hospital for emergency services, till last reported.

In a viral video, the flight carrying 242 passengers could be seen failing to gain altitude and crashing shortly after takeoff. The Air India plane turned into a ball of fire. “Flight No. AI 171, operating Ahmedabad - London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today,” the Airline authorities said.

The aircraft that crashed near Ahmedabad airport was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. According to the data on Boeing.com, it is a mid-size, wide-body, twin-engine and fuel-efficient jet airliner. While today’s incident presents a grim picture of the aircraft, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner has in past achieved a remarkable feat that no other aircraft has done. It has carried more than 1 billion passengers since it took its first flight on December 15, 2009, due to fuel efficiency, a comfortable passenger experience, and innovative design like no other.

Approximately 50 per cent of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner’s body is made up of carbon, a fibre-reinforced polymer, which makes it fuel efficient and lighter than other aircraft. Besides Air India, various famous airlines, including American Airlines, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines, are using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, according to a report by News18. The official list price for a Boeing 787-8 is $248.3 million. The airlines receive significant discounts, bringing down the price of the aircraft to $148-157.5 million. The aircraft is designed to seat 248 passengers in a two-class layout. Talking about its range, the aircraft covers approximately 7,305 nautical miles (14,010 km).

The aircraft is renowned for passenger comfort as it maintains a lower cabin altitude equivalent to 6,000 feet, higher humidity and improved air quality.
