The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the Union Home Ministry to make a decision on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's citizenship status within four weeks. This comes after the ministry sought an extension until April 21, an eight-week delay which the court refused.
The case stems from a petition filed by Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who has also requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter. Shishir claims to possess new evidence, including confidential emails, suggesting that Rahul Gandhi is listed in the United Kingdom’s citizenship records.
Speaking to NDTV, the petitioner said, "We have direct communication from the UK government confirming Gandhi's name in their citizenship records." He further argued that, under Indian law, dual citizenship is prohibited, and acquiring foreign citizenship results in the automatic loss of Indian citizenship.

During a previous hearing in November 2024, a bench comprising Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Om Prakash Shukla had instructed Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey representing the Home Ministry to provide an update on actions taken regarding the plea. However, no official response has been submitted so far.
With the latest court order, the Home Ministry is now required to present its decision on the matter within the next four weeks.
The issue of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship has been a subject of political debate for several years, despite his long-standing tenure as a Member of Parliament since 2004 and his current role as Leader of the Opposition.
