Amritpal Singh, Waris Punjab De chief and radical preacher, was arrested by the Punjab Police from the Moga district of Punjab early on Sunday morning. The Khalistan supporter was on the run since March 18. The pro-Khalistan leader was shifted to Assam’s Dibrugarh jail where other members of his outfit are already lodged.

Amritpal Singh was arrested from Rode village in Moga, where he addressed the Rodewal Gurdwara before surrendering to police. Rode is the native village of Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was gunned down in the 1984 Operation Blue Star at Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Earlier today, the Punjab Police confirmed the arrest of the pro-Khalistan leader in a Twitter post and urged citizens to maintain peace and harmony in the state. The police have also requested people to not share any fake information.

Amritpal Singh has been on the run for a long time. When asked about his arrest earlier on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "It may happen sometime. Earlier he used to roam freely, but now he cannot carry on with his activities."

In a joint operation by Punjab and Delhi Police, two more aides of the fugitive radical preacher and Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh were arrested on April 18 in Punjab's Mohali.

Earlier on April 15, Punjab Police arrested Amritpal's close aide Joga Singh from Sirhind in the Fatehgarh Sahib district. The police have also arrested another key aide of the radical preacher, Papalpreet Singh on April 10 in a joint operation with its counter-intelligence unit.

The pro-Khalistan leader has been on the run since March 18, the day Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt for him.

The crackdown against him came after thousands of Amritpal's supporters entered the Ajnala police station on February 23 with swords and high-calibre firearms and clashed with uniformed police personnel outside the police station to free a member who had been arrested in an abduction case.

The supporters also breached the police barricades outside the Ajnala police station while brandishing swords and firearms.
