West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government will present an amendment bill in the special session of the Assembly on Tuesday. The bill proposes to ensure the death penalty (hanging) to the culprits of rape within 10 days. The name of this anti-rape bill is- Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill 2024. Under this bill, the investigation of rape cases will have to be completed within 21 days. This step comes in the wake of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to extend its support to the bill. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday claimed that all steps on tabling an anti-rape Bill in the West Bengal Assembly were taken unilaterally by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and not by the Speaker as is the practice. However, he had also asserted that he is always in favour of exemplary punishment for rapist-murderers.

Adhikari said that the debate on the issue took place for only two hours, of which the BJP was given one hour. This shows that the ruling party does not want a threadbare discussion on the issue and wants to impose its decision, he added.
