Nearly a year after stepping down as Delhi’s Chief Minister, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has finally been allotted an official government bungalow in the capital. Kejriwal, who had earlier expressed interest in securing the residence at 35, Lodhi Estate once occupied by BSP supremo Mayawati has instead been assigned a different property at 95, Lodhi Estate. The bungalow he had requested is currently occupied by Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, who was allotted the house back in July.
The allotment comes in the wake of proceedings in the Delhi High Court, where Kejriwal had sought appropriate accommodation in his capacity as the national president of a recognised political party. On Monday, the government officially confirmed the allocation of the new bungalow, and sources revealed that Kejriwal personally visited the property the same day to inspect it.
The newly allotted residence is a Type VII bungalow, a spacious category typically featuring four bedrooms, expansive lawns, a garage, office space, and three servant quarters. Spread over approximately 5,000 square feet, Kejriwal’s new home also includes two side lawns and an office area.
Located in the prestigious Lodhi Estate area, the property places Kejriwal among high-profile neighbours. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor resides next door at 97 Lodhi Estate. Other notable residents in the vicinity include RJD leader Misa Bharti and Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi, who live at bungalows 82 and 81 respectively, while bungalows 94 and 96 are occupied by senior Army officials.
Kejriwal has been without an official government residence since resigning as Delhi Chief Minister on September 17, 2024. After vacating his CM residence at 6, Flagstaff Road, on November 4, he had been temporarily staying at the home of AAP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Ashok Mittal, located at 5, Ferozeshah Road.
The Centre had earlier assured the Delhi High Court that Kejriwal would be provided with government accommodation within ten days, a standard practice for presidents of national political parties.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has decided to repurpose Kejriwal’s former CM residence at Flagstaff Road. The property, which underwent renovations during his tenure and later drew criticism over alleged misuse of funds, is now set to be converted into a state guest house with a cafeteria.
