In an unusual occurrence, a 72-year-old lawyer attempted to hurl a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan R Gavai during a court proceeding on Monday, but was stopped by the security personnel.
Rakesh Kishore's Reaction After Incident
Rakesh Kishore said his anger was directed solely at the CJI because of remarks the latter made during a recent hearing about restoring the beheaded Lord Vishnu idol at the Javari temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho.
"I was hurt. I was not inebriated, this was my reaction to his action...I am not fearful. I don't regret what happened,” Kishore told news agency ANI.
"A PIL was filed in the Court of CJI on 16th Sept. The CJI mocked it and said - go and pray to the idol and tell it to restore its own head...When Nupur Sharma's matter came up before the Court, the Court said that she vitiated the atmosphere....When a matter related to our Sanatan Dharma comes up, SC passes such orders. Don't provide relief to the petitioner, but don't mock him either...I was hurt...I was not inebriated; this was my reaction to his action...I am not fearful. I don't regret what happened,” Rakesh Kishore added.
Who is Rakesh Kishore?
Rakesh Kishore is a senior advocate. He is a registered member of the Supreme Court Bar Association. He had enrolled with the Bar in Delhi in 2009.
Kishore was carrying membership cards from the Supreme Court Bar Association, Shahdara Bar Association, and the Bar Council of Delhi, according to a Bar and Bench report.
Rakesh Kishore is the president of his residential society in Mayur Vihar. The residents of the society told The Indian Express that Kishore became the president six years ago.
The residents further said that a number of complaints were filed against Rakesh Kishore. They claimed that Kishore had assaulted a senior citizen back in November 2021. As per the Delhi Police, Kishore had no criminal antecedents.
After the shoe throwing incident, Kishore was held by the security personnel but was allowed to go after three hours of questioning. The advocate was allowed to leave as the Supreme Court’s registrar general refused to press charges against him.

Bar Council Of India Orders Immediate Suspension Of Rakesh Kishore
The Bar Council of India on Monday acted swiftly, suspending Rakesh Kishore with immediate effect. The advocate was escorted outside the court yelling 'Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge', hinting at a reaction to CJI's remarks against Lord Vishnu.
What Did CJI Gavai Say About Lord Vishnu
Earlier, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition seeking the restoration of a 7-foot-tall headless idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple, part of the iconic Khajuraho temple.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih ruled that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), not the court.
"Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It's an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission etc. Sorry," CJI Gavai had told the petitioner.
