Assam Earthquake Today: A strong earthquake of 5.1 magnitude jolted Assam and several parts of Northeast India early this morning, January 5, 2026, at approximately 4:17 AM. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring seismic activity in the country, the epicentre was located near Assam’s Morigaon district at a latitude of 26.37°N and a longitude of 92.29°E, at a depth of 50 km.

The tremors, which were felt across neighbouring states like Meghalaya, triggered panic among residents. However, no immediate casualties or significant property damage have been reported so far.

Strong Tremors Were Felt Across THESE Regions

The earthquake’s impact was felt in several regions, such as Morigaon, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, and the Karbi Anglong districts, as well as the Barak Valley and the eastern districts of Jorhat and Sivasagar. Tremors were also reported in northern and western regions, including Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Barpeta, and the Bodoland Territorial Region, Jagran.com reported.

The tremors were felt across neighbouring states like Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as parts of West Bengal.

The earthquake triggered panic among the residents, forcing them to evacuate their homes during extreme cold and thick fog. According to seismologists, the epicentre lies along the Kopili fault line, which has caused several earthquakes in the past.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), several resident shared their experience. One of the users wrote, "Earthquake just shook everything in Assam. I felt the tremors for 5 seconds continuously. Be safe." Another user wrote, "Shook us out of sleep. Quake jolts Guwahati."

However, no immediate loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
