Assam is all set for a major single-phase election on April 9, 2026, with over 2.9 crore citizens eligible to vote across 126 constituencies. In a standout initiative, the state has set a new record in its Dibrugarh district by establishing 300 all-women polling stations. This initiative sees women taking full responsibilty of election management to promote gender inclusivity and leadership in the democratic process.

Record-Breaking Female Representation

Out of the 1,322 polling stations set up across Dibrugarh’s six Assembly constituencies, nearly a quarter will be managed exclusively by female personnel.

Complete Management: Women will entirely operate the management from presiding officers to polling staff on the booths.

Driven By Performance: Election authorities highlighted that the high number of these stations this year is a result of the exceptional enthusiasm and competence shown by women during training phases.

Comprehensive Election Preparedness

As over 10 lakh voters prepare to head to the polls on April 9, the district administration has finalised extensive logistics:

Inclusivity In Remote Areas: For residents in isolated or riverine regions, special polling teams are utilizing boats to ensure every citizen has access to their voting rights.

Technology And Transparency: District Commissioner Bikram Kairi confirmed that all 1,322 stations are equipped with webcasting facilities, allowing for real-time monitoring and transparent oversight.

Distribution Hub: At Dibrugarh Polytechnic, 51 dedicated counters were established to ensure the efficient distribution of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and essential election materials.

Security And Surveillance

To guarantee a peaceful voting environment, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Abhijit Dilip detailed a robust security framework:

Personnel Deployment: A combination of state police, Home Guards, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) has been stationed at every polling center.

Monitoring: Security forces are maintaining strict surveillance as polling parties move from distribution centers to their designated locations.

This initiative is not just a logistic update as it marks significant shift in Assam's election history. By placing women as the primary managers of the voting process, the state is reinforcing their role as essential stakeholder in democratic framework, moving beyong their traditional identity solely as voters.
