A wanted militant was killed in an encounter between police and Maoists in Assam's Kokrajhar district. The encounter took place in the Nadanguri area, under the jurisdiction of the Salakati police outpost. The deceased militant has been identified as ApilMurmu, alias Rohit Murmu. Police stated that he was the main accused in the recent blast on the Kokrajhar railway track.

According to police, Murmu was previously involved in a bomb blast incident in Jharkhand as well. Last October, he carried out an explosion on a railway track in Jharkhand and subsequently fled to Assam. In Jharkhand, he was known as Rohit Murmu, while in Assam, he went by the name ApilMurmu. He was a resident of KachugaonGrampur in Kokrajhar district and had contacts in both Jharkhand and Assam.

How He Became NASLA Commandant

According to police, Murmu was previously a member of the militant organization National Santhal Liberation Army (NASLA). When the organization surrendered, he did not surrender and fled to Jharkhand. There, he became the commandant of NASLA and later also associated with Maoist organizations. A team from Jharkhand police had recently come to Assam, as he had been involved in violent incidents in Jharkhand since 2015.

Recent Railway Track Blast

Notably, on the night of October 23, around 1:00 am, a suspected explosion occurred on the railway track between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations. This caused 8 to 10 trains to run late. Repairs to the railway track were completed by 5:25 am, and normal services resumed from 5:30 am.

Track Damaged By Bomb Blast

The driver of a goods train, the UP AZARA Sugar Train, felt a jolt and stopped the train. Upon investigation, it was found that the track and sleepers were damaged, apparently caused by a bomb blast.

Railway Superintendent of Police Pranjit Borah stated, "Damage to the track was detected, repairs have been completed, and train movement has normalised. The investigation is still in its initial stages. If this proves to be a case of sabotage, those involved will be identified."
