Assam Gang Rape: The prime accused involved in the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Assam's Dhing, died after he jumped into a pond while trying to escape the police custody, officials said. He allegedly jumped into a pond with cuffed hands early on Saturday when a police team had taken him for scene recreation.

Taffazul Islam, who was arrested on Friday, allegedly escaped the police custody and jumped into a pond.

"The accused escaped from police custody and jumped into the pond. A search operation was launched immediately and his body was recovered after nearly two hours," police said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Outrage and anger have gripped the Nagaon district of Assam following the alleged gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl on Thursday. The incident has sparked widespread protests, with student union and civil society organisations calling for a bandh in the region.

According to the reports, the minor girl was found in a semi-conscious state lying near a pond, with her bicycle beside her. Some local residents who spotted the girl immediately informed the police and she was rescued and rushed to the Dhing FRU for medical assistance.

The incident is said to have occurred when the girl was returning home from her tuition in the evening. The local residents who rescued her stated that the minor reported being gang-raped by three men. She was reportedly lying on the road without any clothing for around an hour before being discovered.

"We saw a girl was lying near a pond with her cycle laying besides her. We went to her and asked what happened. She said three men raped her. We demand the culprit to be arrested within 12 hours," the local residents said.

The student unions, including the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), and other civil society organisations have called for a bandh in the region, reflecting the deep-seated anger and demand for justice for the young victim.

The incident comes amid the ongoing nationwide protests and outrage over the recent gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata which has shaken the country and led to renewed calls for stricter laws and swifter justice for victims of sexual violence.
