A 43-year-old man from Sribhumi district in Assam has been arrested in Cachar for allegedly posing as a doctor using forged documents for nearly ten years, during which he reportedly oversaw around 50 caesarean surgeries at a hospital in Silchar, police said.
Cachar’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Numal Mahatta, confirmed the arrest and stated that a detailed investigation is currently underway.

The accused, identified as Pulak Malakar, had been working as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram for several years. Police records also indicate that he worked at multiple private hospitals in Silchar since arriving in the city in 2016.
Malakar has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 125 (negligent acts endangering human life), Section 271 (negligently spreading infections dangerous to life), Section 318(4) (cheating), Section 319(2) (cheating by personation), Section 336(4) (forgery with intent to harm reputation), Section 340(2) (using forged documents as genuine), and Section 112(2) (petty organised crime).
“Based on credible intelligence, we apprehended Pulak Malakar, 43, son of Muktaranjan Malakar of Badarpur, Sribhumi district, who was impersonating a gynecologist and obstetrician using a forged MBBS certificate and documents,” Mahatta stated in an official release, according to the HT report.
Mahatta added that Malakar’s credentials were verified and found to be fraudulent during a thorough examination, which prompted the registration of a formal case. He was subsequently produced before a court, and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of his alleged malpractices and identify any possible accomplices.
According to police findings, Malakar began his career as a fourth-grade employee in private hospitals. However, starting in 2016, he gradually assumed the identity of a qualified doctor. He is alleged to have used a forged MBBS degree purportedly issued by Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, to support his deception.
“Malakar has confessed to purchasing fake certificates by paying a substantial amount to a racket believed to be operating in Barak Valley and other parts of the country,” an investigating official said.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) Rajdeep Roy stated that Pulak Malakar was offered a position at the institute based on the recommendation of a senior doctor, acting on behalf of the authorities at Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram. Roy emphasized that at the time of his appointment, no one was aware that Malakar’s credentials were forged.
“We appoint assistants in various departments based on recommendations and trust. He was referred by a senior doctor, so we gave him a chance. However, he never performed a C-section surgery independently; he only assisted in some cases,” Roy said, according to the HT report.
He also stated that about a month ago, the hospital authorities grew suspicious of Malakar’s credentials and launched an internal investigation.

“We were conducting an internal investigation when police suddenly arrived and detained him on Saturday. We are now cooperating fully with the police in their investigation,” Roy added.
