In a shocking incident, an assistant engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD) in Assam allegedly died by suicide in her rented accommodation.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Jyotisha Das who hailed from Guwahati and was posted in Bongaigaon. She was found hanging inside her room on Tuesday afternoon, with a purported suicide note by her side, alleging pressure by colleagues to clear 'fraudulent bills'.

"I am taking this step due to extreme stress from my work. There is no one to guide me in the office. I am tired and have nowhere to go. My parents are worried for me," the suicide note stated, as per a report by NDTV.

In her handwritten suicide note, the woman has named two of her senior officials for the abatement of suicide. She accused Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Aminul Islam and Executive Engineer Dinesh Medhi of persistent mental harassment.

The Bongaigaon Police registered the complaint lodged by the victim's family and arrested the named accused. Speaking about the incident, the police said that both the named officials have been arrested. Bongaigaon SP Mohan Lal Meena said, "We have arrested the two persons named in the suicide note. They have been sent to judicial custody. We have got permission to interrogate them and carry out our investigation".

News agency PRI reported that the two officials forced her to pass inflated bills submitted by a contractor and pressurised her regarding the construction of a mini stadium in Bongaigaon.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also took cognisance of the tragic incident and directed a thorough investigation into the case.
