Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday named former chief minister Atishi as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi assembly, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds a majority with 48 MLAs. This is the first time a woman has been chosen for the role. Moreover, the eighth assembly session in Delhi, commencing Monday, will witness a woman LoP take on a woman Delhi Chief Minister for the first time in history.

AAP leader Atishi secured her Kalkaji seat after a tough contest against former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress leader Alka Lamba. Last year in September, she was named as the Delhi CM during a meeting of AAP MLAs at Arvind Kejriwal's residence. At 43, Atishi also became the youngest Delhi CM in history and was sworn-in on September 21.

Meanwhile, the BJP formed the government on Thursday after an oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, appointing Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as Delhi's chief minister, making her the fourth woman to hold the position in the national capital.

Among the various factors contributing to AAP's downfall in the national capital was the reluctance of both AAP and Congress to forge an alliance.
