The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has been implemented in Delhi, offering free treatment and health insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh per family. A MoU for the scheme was signed between the National Health Authority (NHA) of the Centre and the State Health Agency of the Delhi Government on Saturday.

The signing ceremony was attended by Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, among other senior leaders.

Following the agreement, the process of registering beneficiaries and issuing Ayushman Bharat cards will commence.  A special campaign will also be launched to enrol the beneficiaries under the scheme. Citizens will be able to register through the Ayushman Bharat mobile app or the official web portal using Aadhaar and mobile number verification.

CM Rekha Gupta stated that in the first phase, health cards would be issued to 2.35 lakh families, with the process beginning on April 10. She added that the scheme includes packages for the treatment of 1,961 types of illnesses. A total of 30,957 hospitals are registered under Ayushman Bharat across the country, allowing beneficiaries to avail of treatment in any city.

"Hearty congratulations to the people of Delhi. Today, the Ayushman scheme has been implemented in Delhi, and the people of Delhi are finally getting what they are entitled to. I thank the central government and PM Narendra Modi for this," the chief minister said in a congratulatory message to the people of Delhi.

The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme provides eligible families with annual cashless healthcare coverage for hospitalisation, covering all ages. In September 2024, the Union Cabinet extended this benefit to all citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income. Senior citizens in enrolled families also receive an additional Rs 5 lakh individual cover.

The scheme includes diagnostics, medicines, surgeries, implants and 15 days of post-hospitalisation care. Under the updated PMJAY scheme in Delhi, each family will receive health insurance coverage worth Rs 10 lakh. The cost will be jointly borne by the Centre and the Delhi government, with each contributing Rs 5 lakh. A total of Rs 2,144 crore has been allocated by the Delhi government for the scheme’s implementation.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme had previously not been implemented in Delhi, with the Centre accusing the AAP government in Delhi of blocking its execution. The BJP had made the issue a key part of its election manifesto, promising to extend the scheme to Delhi with an added Rs 5 lakh top-up if elected.

With the new government in place, the scheme is now set to benefit a large segment of the population, fulfilling the party’s electoral promise. Ministers including Pravesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Pankaj Singh and Kapil Mishra were also present at the agreement signing.
