As many as 66 persons were arrested over protests that erupted in the backdrop of the sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls in Maharashtra’s Badlapur. Besides, four FIRs have also been registered against 500 protesters amid massive outrage. Thane police and Government Railway Police (GRP) said more arrests would be made after ascertaining the CCTV clips, the Indian Express reported.

DCP Badlapur Sudhakar Pathare said the arrested individuals have been booked under sections of rioting, damaging public property, and causing hurt to public servants. He also urged people to not spread rumors and report police if they come across any sensitive information.

 

Meanwhile, the internet ban will remain enforced in Badlapur today as well.

GRP DCP Manoj Patil said train services, which were suspended owing to the public outrage, were also restored and the trains were plying smoothly on their routes.

A big uproar was witnessed in Badlapur as people took to the streets against the sexual abuse of two four-year-old girls by a sweeper at their school in Badlapur last week. Furious protesters blocked highways and even gathered at the railway station, bringing the city to a standstill.

The accused, Akshay Shinde, has been arrested by the police.

Notably, the incident came in the backdrop of nationwide public ire against the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. Doctors across the country are holding demonstrations across the country, demanding justice for the victim.

The Supreme Court took suo moto cognisance of the matter and announced a task force to formulate protocols for the safety of medical professionals. Besides, the top court rebuked the Bengal Government and the state police for several discrepancies during the initial phase of the probe. The matter is currently being investigated by the CBI.

The apex court has also sought a status report from the Bengal Government and the federal probe agency in this regard.
