Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line: For the first time since India’s Independence, the remote eastern state of Mizoram will be directly connected to the Indian Railways network by train. On September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line in Mizoram, aiming to improve connectivity and boost economic growth in the state.
Spanning 51.38 kilometres, the Bairabi-Sairang Railway line originates from Bairabi, near the Assam-Mizoram border, and extends to Sairang, a small town just 18 km from Aizawl.
PM Modi To Flag Off Three Trains From Mizoram
During his visit to Mizoram, PM Modi is set to flag off three new express trains, significantly improving state connectivity to the rest of the country. “On September 13, three trains will be flagged off - two originating from Bairabi and one from Sairang. The Bairabi services will connect Kolkata and Guwahati, while from Sairang, a new Rajdhani Express will be introduced to link Mizoram with the national capital,” The Indian Express quoted a senior railway officer as saying.
Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express Train
In a bid to enhance the state’s connectivity with the national capital, a weekly Rajdhani Express train will be launched between Sairang (18 km from Aizwal) and Anand Vihar Railway Station in Delhi.
Bairabi-Guwahati Express Train
The Sairang-Guwahati Express Train will run daily, providing a crucial link between Mizoram and Assam for the passengers. The express train will significantly boost tourism and improve connectivity to the remote locations.
Bairabi-Kolkata Express Train
The Sairang-Kolkata Express Train will operate three times a week on Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday, offering a vital railway link between Mizoram and West Bengal.

The Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line is constructed at a cost of Rs 8,071 crore and features 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges, and six road underbridges. Among these, Bridge No. 196, which is 114 metres high, stands out as it is 42 meters taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar. Spanning over 51.38 kilometres, the Bairabi-Sairang Railway line will boost connectivity, tourism and socio-economic development in the state.
