Mizoram Rail Update:  Mizoram’s capital, Aizwal, is set to be connected to the Indian Railways network for the first time since independence with the completion of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line. The 51.38-kilometre project aims to strengthen connectivity, cut Guwahti-Aizwal travel time, and open new opportunities for the people of Mizoram.

The construction work is progressing rapidly, with 95 per cent of physical work already completed and 97 per cent of the fund utilised, news agency ANI reported.

Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line Update

-Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in 2014, and within 10 years, the project is nearing completion.

- The Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line spans over 51.38 kilometres and is located 12 kilometres away from Aizwal. The Rail Line will serve as Aizwal’s rail getaway with two platforms, three tracks and modern amenities.

- The Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line will cut down travel time between Guwahati and Aizawl from 14-18 hours to 12 hours.

- The Rail Line will improve connectivity, ensure faster access to goods and services and boost trade, tourism, healthcare, education and employment across the state.

- Around 95 per cent of the work is completed, and a successful trial run was also conducted by Northeast Frontier Railway in May 2025, followed by a safety inspection in June.

- According to officials, trains can run at a speed of 90 kilometres per hour on the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line.

- With the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line by PM Modi on September 13, Mizoram will become the fourth northeast state to be directly connected to the Indian Railways network.

Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line Construction Details

- The Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line has been constructed on some of the most challenging terrain in the Northeast.

- Engineers have constructed a total of 48 tunnels with a combined length of over 12 kilometres. 142 bridges, including both major and minor structures, have been constructed.

- With a height of 104 metres, Bridge No. 196 stands taller than the iconic Qutub Minar in Delhi. It is also the highest bridge in its section and the second-highest pier bridge in the Indian Railways.

- It also comprises five road overbridges and six road underpasses to ensure seamless integration with other transport modes.
