West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping force in Bangladesh amid ongoing violence in the country. Besides, she called on Prime Minister Modi to intervene and ensure the safety of religious minorities in the neighbouring nation.
“We have families... properties... and loved ones in Bangladesh. We accept whatever stance the Government of India takes on this...but we condemn atrocities on religious grounds anywhere in the world and appeal to the Union government, and the Prime Minister, to intervene,” CM Banerjee said.
She also spoke with ISKCON's Kolkata unit chief to express her anguish over the incidents in Bangladesh. “If Indians are attacked in Bangladesh, then we cannot tolerate it. We can bring back (repatriate) our people from there. The Government of India can take this matter up with the United Nations... so a peacekeeping force can be sent to Bangladesh,” she added.
Mamata Banerjee stated that she did not intend to interfere in the internal affairs of any country, but emphasized that her government had rescued Bangladeshi fishermen who accidentally entered Indian waters and provided them with proper care.
Notably, religious minorities, primarily Hindus, are facing atrocities at the hands of radical elements in Bangladesh. Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu was arrested and charged with sedition last week.
Prabhu has been vocal about the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and has organised several protests calling for the protection of the religious minority community. He was arrested on November 25 at Dhaka Airport and subsequently jailed on sedition charges. Protests erupted outside the Chittagong court, during which a lawyer was reportedly killed by the mob.
