A man, the facility manager of a government hospital, has been arrested for allegedly raping several women staff members and threatening to kill them if they spoke out, at the Panskura Super Specialty Hospital in Bengal's East Midnapore district.

The incident came to light after one of the female staffers lodged a complaint against Zahir Abbas Khan at the Panskura police station. Based on her statement, Khan was arrested and is scheduled to be produced in court later today.

Officials said the survivors have demanded the “strictest punishment” for the accused. Meanwhile, the hospital authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

BJP Blame TMC For Incident

The incident has sparked outrage locally, with residents staging a protest outside the police station. The BJP alleged that Khan enjoyed “considerable influence,” indirectly targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). The TMC, however, denied any association with the accused. Party leader Sheikh Samir Uddin called Khan a “fraud” who misused the party’s name for personal gains. Condemning the incident as “shameful,” he too demanded severe punishment.

The Case Come Top light After A Year

The controversy comes a year after the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, a case that triggered nationwide protests. The main accused, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, was arrested, but the Calcutta High Court later transferred the case to the CBI.

The victim’s parents, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation. They met CBI Director Praveen Sood in Delhi and voiced concerns about the probe. On August 9, marking one year since the crime, they led a protest rally named Nabanna Abhiyan. The demonstration, which began peacefully, turned violent when protesters attempted to march towards the state secretariat despite police warnings, prompting a lathi-charge. The victim’s mother alleged she sustained a head injury during the police action and that her shankha, a traditional conch-shell bangle, was broken.
