Bengal Voter List Revision: The Election Commission has introduced a new step in the process of updating voter lists in Bengal. The Commission has granted recognition to additional documents for inclusion in the voter list, which will be prepared through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. This new decision is expected to streamline the process for many eligible voters, especially those whose names are missing from the current Bengal voter list.
According to a recent notification issued by the Election Commission, if a person’s name is not included in the voter list of Bengal prepared under the SIR (2002), but the name of their parents or a close relative is included in the voter list from Bihar’s recent SIR process, the new document will now be accepted as a valid proof for inclusion in the Bengal voter list. This initiative ensures that voters who have valid claims but are excluded due to technical reasons or previous discrepancies will be able to participate in future elections.
An official from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal explained that this initiative has been taken to ensure that no valid voter’s name is excluded from the list.

Bihar Voter List Now Valid in Bengal
The Election Commission’s new guideline also allows the voter list prepared in Bihar to be recognized in Bengal. This decision makes it easier for voters who have migrated or moved between the two states to have their names included in the electoral rolls. The validity of the Bihar voter list in Bengal is expected to make the process more inclusive and flexible, especially for people with connections in both regions.
These Documents Accepted for Voter List Inclusion
The Election Commission has specified a range of documents that can be used for verifying Indian citizenship under the SIR process. These documents include:
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- 10th-grade certificate (Secondary) or higher education certificate from the Bengal Education Board
- Residency certificate issued by the appropriate authority of the state government
- Forest Rights Certificate
- Caste certificate
- National Register of Citizens (NRC) certificate for any citizen
- Family registration certificate issued by local administration
- Land or property documents
Additionally, Aadhaar cards will only be accepted as a form of identification, but not as proof of citizenship.
For those whose names were included in the 2002 Bengal voter list, no additional documents will be required for the 2025 revision. However, individuals whose names were not part of the 2002 list can now verify their eligibility by proving that their parents or close relatives are listed in the 2025 Bihar voter list. This will allow them to get their names included in the new voter list for Bengal.
