Bengal Weather: The Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata has issued an alert for Kalbaisakhi storm that is likely to hit five South Bengal districts during the next 48 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected in Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Jhargram and West Midnapore on Thursday. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in certain places. Meanwhile, there shall be no respite from heat for people in some parts of the state. On Thursday, all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, will experience uncomfortable weather conditions. Kolkata is likely to witness thunderstorms and rain on May 16. 

“The upper air cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists. The trough from above cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to south Chhattisgarh now runs from above cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and adjoining Sub Himalayan West Bengal to north Rayalaseema across Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Telangana at 0.9 km above mean sea level,” said IMD, Kolkata in its bulletin.

“In view of westerly to south-westerly lower-level winds and strong solar insolation heating, hot and humid weather condition very likely over South Bengal till 15th May 2025 and enhanced thunderstorm with heavy rainfall activity is likely over some districts of North Bengal and thunderstorm with gusty winds activity over some districts of South Bengal,” IMD, Kolkata added.

Warning For South Bengal

May 15: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain very likely to occur at one or two places over East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, Jhargram and West Midnapore Nadia districts of South Bengal.

Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over rest districts of South Bengal.

Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to occur at one or two places over Jhargram, West Midnapore, Purulia, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of South Bengal.

May 16: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain very likely to occur at one or two places over Birbhum, Murshidabad, Purulia, Bankura, West Midnapore and West Burdwan districts of South Bengal.

Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30- 40 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over rest districts of South Bengal.

May 17: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 40-50 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain very likely to occur at one or two places over Purulia, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Jhargram, Birbhum and Murshidabad districts of South Bengal.

May 18: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30- 40 kmph), lightning, light to moderate rainfall likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of South Bengal.

Warning For North Bengal

May 15: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of North Bengal with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, Coochbehar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts of North Bengal.

May 16: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of North Bengal with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over North Dinajpur, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Coochbehar districts of North Bengal.

May 17: Thunderstorms with gusty wind (speed reaching 30-40 kmph), lightning and light to moderate rain likely to occur at one or two places over all the districts of North Bengal with heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) likely to occur at one or two places over Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Coochbehar and North Dinajpur districts of North Bengal.
